SVG to G-code

Free online SVG to G-code converter. Convert SVG to G-code and get G-code toolpaths for CNC routers, laser engravers and pen plotters, in millimetres. Reads the SVG at any size, so the result is as sharp as you need. Runs in your browser: nothing uploaded, no sign-up.

How it works

  1. Upload your artwork

Mono mode is preset, a single cut outline is what a machine wants, not colour layers.

  2. Set your real size

Choose millimetres or inches and the finished width. The file carries physical units, not pixels.

  3. Check the preview, then cut

Inspect the toolpath before you download. Cuts draw solid, rapids dashed.

SVG to G-code without installing anything: drop the SVG, set feed, speed and power (laser) or depth and passes (router), and download a .gcode file. This svg to gcode converter orders the cuts, holes before outlines and short hops between them, so parts do not drop out before they are finished.

The output is plain svg to gcode grbl code: G0/G1 moves, M3/M5 for the laser (or M4 dynamic power), a safe Z for the router, and it ends with the tool off. It runs in Universal G-code Sender (UGS), LaserGRBL, Candle, bCNC and LightBurn’s G-code console.

Why it matters

Correct units, stated in the file

DXF exports write $INSUNITS. Without it a part imports at 25.4x the intended size, which is the single most common cause of a ruined first cut.

Y axis the right way up

SVG puts +Y down the screen; CAD and CAM put it up. We flip it. Exporting without that correction gives a part mirrored about the X axis, it cuts, but backwards.

Closed contours

A cutter following an open outline leaves the part attached. Outlines are closed, and anything that is not is flagged before you download.

Conservative G-code

The tool is disengaged before every reposition, retracted before every rapid, and the program always ends tool-off and clear.

Is SVG to G-code worth paying for?

A G-code is the file a shop actually runs. Walk through the artwork requirements a laser cutter, a CNC shop or a sign maker publishes and the same request appears: send something a machine can follow. What turns up instead is a screenshot or a logo pulled off a website at 600 pixels, and somebody redraws it by hand — twenty-five to forty minutes — or sends it to an art service at $25 to $60 a file.

The conversion here is free and unlimited and stays that way. The paid plan is what unlocks the machine formats, which are never watermarked at any tier because a mark in a cut file is extra cut paths a machine would run.

Questions

Does the G-code work with GRBL?

Yes. It uses only the commands GRBL supports: G0, G1, G21/G20, G90, M3, M4, M5 and F/S values. It homes nothing and assumes you have set your own work origin.

Can I run it in UGS or LaserGRBL?

Yes. Open the .gcode file in Universal G-code Sender or LaserGRBL, set your origin, and run a frame or dry run above the material first.

What feed and speed should I use?

For a diode laser on 3 mm plywood, start around 300–600 mm/min at full power with several passes; for engraving, 1500–3000 mm/min at lower power. For a router, use the chip load for your bit. Always test on scrap: feed rate and power vary by machine.

Why does my laser burn at the start of each line?

Constant-power mode (M3) fires while the head accelerates. Tick "Dynamic power (M4)" here and enable GRBL laser mode ($32=1): power then scales with the actual speed, so corners and line starts stop over-burning.

What units does the file use?

Whichever you pick, millimetres or inches, and the choice is written into the file header so the receiving software does not have to guess.

Will this work with my laser?

DXF is written as R2000 by default, which LightBurn, Fusion, AutoCAD and current CAM packages all read. There is an R12 option for older controllers that predate LWPOLYLINE.

Can I trust the G-code?

Preview the toolpath first, and dry-run any new program above the material. The generated code assumes you have set your own work origin, and it homes nothing.
