A free, online alternative to embroidery digitizing software

Digitizing software lets a person decide every stitch. An automatic digitizer decides for you. That trade is the whole comparison: speed and price on one side, control over small lettering and fine detail on the other.

Ink/Stitch: free and open source

An extension for Inkscape that digitizes by hand: you draw satin columns, fills and running stitch as paths and set each one's parameters. Free on Windows, macOS and Linux, and very capable, with a learning curve to match. If you want to digitize properly for nothing, it is the one to learn.

Hatch, Wilcom and Brother PE-Design: paid

Commercial digitizing suites with auto-digitizing plus full manual control: satin columns of varying width, pull compensation, per-object density and underlay choices. Wilcom is the commercial standard; Hatch is built on Wilcom technology for home and small business users; PE-Design is Brother's own.

Embrilliance: lettering and editing

Paid, modular, popular for monograms and names from its keyboard fonts, and for resizing and merging existing designs.

This site: automatic, in the browser, free to try

Drop a logo or type text and it is digitized at once: tatami fills on an underlay with pull compensation, thin lines sewn as running or bean stitch, lock stitches and trims, fitted to the hoop before stitching. It writes PES, DST and JEF, opens all three, and nothing is installed or uploaded.

Where hand digitizing still wins

Small lettering, satin borders and fine detail. This digitizer sews areas as fills with one fixed pull compensation (0.2 mm), and does not make variable-width satin columns, per-fabric compensation or per-object density. For a cap with 5 mm text, or a design you will sew a thousand times, use digitizing software or a digitizer.

Which to choose

For a name, a simple logo or a patch at a reasonable size, try it here first: it takes a minute and costs nothing to preview. For production work and small text, the paid suites, or Ink/Stitch if you have the time, are worth it.

Try it on your own file

Turn a logo into a PES, DST or JEF file now, or type text on the free embroidery text page.
