What it shows
| Geometry | Lines, circles, arcs, polylines with their curved segments, ellipses, splines, points, solids and 3D polylines, and every block placed in the drawing, at its position, scale and rotation. Dimensions are drawn as CAD draws them, value and arrows included. |
| Text | Single-line and multi-line text at its height and angle, with CAD's special characters (%%c for ⌀, %%d for °, %%p for ±). It is set in a plain sans-serif: the drawing's own SHX and TrueType fonts are not in the file. |
| Layers | Every layer in its colour, with a switch. Layers that were off or frozen when the drawing was saved start switched off, as in CAD, and can be switched on. |
| Colours | AutoCAD's 256 index colours and true colours, by layer and by block. On the white background, white lines are drawn black, as CAD plots them. |
| Size | The drawing's units as it declares them, and its real extent. The measure tool snaps to the nearest point of the geometry. |
What it does not show
| AutoCAD 2007 files | The 2007 format (AC1021) keeps its data in a container of its own. Save the drawing as 2004, 2010, 2013 or 2018, or as DXF, and it opens. |
| Hatches and 3D solids | Hatch patterns, regions, 3D solids, images and OLE objects are listed as not drawn, so nothing goes missing without a word. |
| Paper space layouts | The model is shown. A drawing whose model space is empty is shown from its layout instead. |

Questions
How do I open a DXF file without AutoCAD?
Drop it on this page. It is read in your browser: nothing is installed, and the file is not uploaded anywhere, so it works on drawings you are not allowed to send out.
Which versions open?
AutoCAD R13, R14, 2000, 2004, 2010, 2013 and 2018 DWG, which covers the files AutoCAD has written since 1994 except the 2007 format; and DXF from R12 on.
Why is some text in a different font?
A DWG names its fonts but does not carry them. The text is placed at its own position, height and angle, in a plain sans-serif, so a title block reads correctly even where the letter shapes differ.
Can I measure the drawing?
Yes. Press Measure, then click two points: the distance, the X and Y differences and the angle appear, in the drawing's units. Clicks snap to the nearest point of the geometry.
Can I edit the drawing here?
