Pattern Generator

Turn one motif into a seamless repeat: half-drop, brick, mirror, grid or tossed. Download the tile for fabric and print-on-demand, or a full sheet.

How it works

  1. Upload a motif

An SVG is used as it is. A picture - PNG, JPG, WebP - is traced to vector first, its background left out, so the pattern stays sharp at any print size.

  2. Choose the repeat

Straight grid, brick, half-drop, four-way mirror or tossed. Set the motif size, the space between, and a turn.

  3. Download the tile or a sheet

The tile is one seamless repeat unit for fabric, wallpaper and print-on-demand. The sheet is the pattern laid out ready to print or cut.

The picture keeps its pixel size, and you see the result before you download it.

Why it matters

Truly seamless

A motif that crosses the edge of the tile carries on across the join: it is drawn again on the opposite side and clipped, so the repeat has no seam however many times it is tiled.

Vector all the way

The tile and the sheet are SVG with the motif defined once and reused, so the file is small and prints crisp at any size. PNG versions are there for the upload forms that want pixels.

The industry layouts

Half-drop is the fabric standard because it hides the grid; brick does the same across; mirror gives the four-way symmetry of tiles and damask.

Questions

How do I convert Image to SVG?

Drop your Image file on this page, check the preview, and press Download. The SVG is made in a few seconds, with no sign-up.

Is my Image file uploaded anywhere?

No. The image to svg conversion runs in your browser, on your own device. The file never leaves it.

What is a half-drop repeat?

Each column of motifs is dropped by half a motif compared with the one beside it. The eye stops seeing rows and columns, which is why most printed fabric uses it.

Which file do I upload to a fabric printer?

The tile. Spoonflower, print-on-demand shops and mills repeat it themselves; give them the PNG at their stated resolution, or the SVG if they take vector.

Can I cut the pattern on a Cricut?

Download the sheet SVG. Motifs at the edges are clipped by the sheet, so for cutting, choose a layout and size where you are happy with the edge pieces, or delete them in Design Space.

Why was my picture traced?

A repeat has to scale without going soft, and a photograph of a motif would carry its own background into every copy. Tracing gives a clean vector motif with the background removed.
