Can I edit an EPS without Illustrator?

Can I retype text in an EPS?
No. The editor works on shapes: it moves, recolours and reshapes lettering, but it does not retype it. To change wording, delete the old letters and bring in new ones from an SVG.
Will optimising break my SVG?
Editor-specific attributes are removed, so the file may no longer round-trip perfectly into Inkscape or Illustrator with their own state intact. The rendered result is identical.
How much smaller?
