Pixel Art to Cross Stitch: Free Pattern Maker with DMC Threads
Turn pixel art, a sprite or any picture into a counted cross-stitch chart in DMC floss colours: one stitch per pixel for pixel art, a printable PDF chart with symbols and a thread list. Free, in your browser.
DMC colour data: craft-color-codes by MakeBead, CC BY 4.0. DMC is a trademark of DMC; colours on a screen approximate the thread.
How it works
Drop the picture
Pixel art, a sprite, a logo, a drawing or a photo. Pixel art is charted at its own grid, one stitch per pixel, however much it was enlarged; anything else is charted at the width in stitches you choose.
Choose threads and fabric
Up to the number of DMC colours you want; each colour is matched to the nearest DMC floss by CIEDE2000, the colour difference that follows what the eye sees. Pick 11, 14, 16, 18, 22 or 28-count to see the finished size.
Download the chart
A printable PDF: chart pages of 50 × 65 stitches, numbered, with a bold line every ten, then the thread list with DMC numbers and stitch counts. Or the whole chart as one PNG, or the threads as a CSV.

Why it matters
Pixel art stays pixel art
A sprite saved at 10× is found to be 10 × 10 blocks and charted at its real size. Charting it at any other size smears every edge into half-colours.
Real DMC numbers
All 489 DMC six-strand floss colours, matched by CIEDE2000. Colours that land on the same floss merge, so every symbol on the chart is a thread you can buy.
Private and free
The chart is made in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and there is no sign-up.
Questions
How do I convert Image to Cross stitch?
Drop your Image file on this page, check the preview, and press Download. The Cross stitch is made in a few seconds, with no sign-up.
Is my Image file uploaded anywhere?
No. The image to cross stitch conversion runs in your browser, on your own device. The file never leaves it.
How do I turn pixel art into a cross-stitch pattern?
Drop the PNG here. Its pixel grid is found even if the picture was enlarged, each pixel becomes one cross stitch, and each colour the nearest DMC floss. Download the PDF chart and thread list.
What size will it be when stitched?
Stitches across divided by the fabric count, in inches: 80 stitches on 14-count Aida is 5.7 in (14.5 cm). The page shows the size for the count you pick.
How many colours should I use?
Pixel art: as many as it has (often under 16). A photo: 20 to 40 gives a good likeness; fewer is quicker to stitch and simpler to follow.
Are the DMC colours exact?
They are the nearest of the 489 DMC floss colours to each colour in the picture. A screen or printer shows thread colours only approximately, so check against a real DMC colour card for anything that must match exactly.
Can I use the chart for a pattern I sell?
The chart is yours. The picture it was made from must be yours to use: a game sprite or a character belongs to its owner.
