GPX to KML Converter for Google Earth

Convert GPX tracks, routes and waypoints to KML for Google Earth and My Maps, with elevation and names kept. Drop several GPX files to merge them into one KML. Free, nothing uploaded.

Paste GeoJSON, KML, GPX, WKT or CSV

How it works

  1. Add your GPX

Drop a GeoJSON, TopoJSON, KML or KMZ, GPX, CSV with coordinates, WKT, or a zipped shapefile, or paste the text. It is read in your browser.

  2. Check the map

The features are drawn on a preview with their count, geometry types, bounds and attributes, so you can see it read correctly before converting.

  3. Download the KML

Pick the output and download. Attributes come along; anything a format cannot hold is listed rather than dropped silently.

GPX to KML here reads the GPS file itself - waypoints, tracks with every point and routes - and writes a KML that Google Earth, Google My Maps and QGIS open directly, with names, descriptions and elevation kept.

This GPX to KML converter is free and runs online in your browser: nothing is uploaded, so a run, a ride or a survey route from Garmin, Strava or Komoot stays on your device. To convert GPX to KML, drop the file, check the track on the map preview, and download.

GPX to KML Google Earth: tracks come out with a bold red line style, because Google Earth draws an unstyled line thin and white and it disappears against satellite imagery. Pick GPX to KMZ instead for the zipped version that opens with a double-click and is small enough to email.

Convert multiple GPX to KML in one go: pick or drop several GPX files together. They are merged into one KML with a folder for each file, or tick "One file per upload" to get a ZIP with a KML for every GPX.

GPX to KML in QGIS

In QGIS, drag the GPX in, choose the tracks or waypoints layer, then Layer > Export > Save Features As and pick "Keyhole Markup Language [KML]". This page does the same without installing anything, and does tracks, routes and waypoints in one file.

Is there a GPX to KML app?

This page works as one on a phone or a computer: open it in the browser, pick the GPX from your files and download the KML. There is nothing to install and no account.

GPX to KML: what Reddit recommends

The usual answers are GPSBabel on the desktop, QGIS, or opening the GPX straight in Google Earth Pro. They all work; this page is the quick one when you just need the KML, and it keeps the file on your device.

Does Google Earth open GPX directly?

Google Earth Pro on the desktop can import a GPX through File > Open. Google Earth on the web and most other map tools want KML or KMZ, which is what this page makes.

Why it matters

Attributes kept

Names, descriptions and every property travel with the features: KML ExtendedData, shapefile .dbf fields, CSV columns and GPX names.

Nothing uploaded

Survey data, client boundaries and GPS tracks stay on your computer. The conversion runs in this tab.

Coordinates untouched

Numbers are not reprojected or quietly shifted. Precision is yours to set: six decimal places is about 11 cm.

Questions

How do I convert GPX to KML for Google Earth?

Drop the GPX file here, leave the format on KML (or pick KMZ), and download. Open the file in Google Earth: tracks show as red lines and waypoints as pins with their names.

Can I convert multiple GPX files to KML at once?

Yes. Select several GPX files together: they become one KML with a folder per file, or a ZIP with one KML each if you tick "One file per upload".

Is elevation kept?

Yes. Heights from the GPX are written into the KML coordinates as longitude, latitude, altitude.

What is the difference between KML and KMZ?

A KMZ is a KML zipped, with the KML inside as doc.kml. It is smaller and Google Earth opens it the same way.

What is a GeoJSON file?

A GeoJSON file is JSON that describes map features: points, lines and polygons with their properties, in longitude and latitude on WGS84 (RFC 7946). Web maps such as Leaflet, Mapbox, OpenLayers and Google Maps read it directly.

Which formats can I convert?

In: GeoJSON, TopoJSON, KML, KMZ, GPX, CSV (lat/lon columns or a WKT column), WKT and zipped shapefiles. Out: GeoJSON, KML, KMZ, GPX, CSV, WKT, shapefile (ZIP), SVG and DXF.

Why does my shapefile need to be zipped?

A shapefile is several files: .shp holds the shapes, .dbf the attributes and .prj the coordinate system. Zip them together and drop the ZIP so the attributes and projection come too.

Does it reproject coordinates?

No. GeoJSON, KML and GPX all use longitude and latitude, so they convert exactly. A shapefile in UTM or a national grid keeps its numbers, and the page tells you so; reproject in QGIS or ogr2ogr if you need WGS84.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Pick or drop several files together: they are merged into one output, and in KML each file gets its own folder. Tick "One file per upload" to get each converted separately in a ZIP instead.

Why is my GeoJSON in the wrong place on the map?

Usually longitude and latitude are swapped (GeoJSON is longitude first), or the data is in a projected system such as UTM. The preview and the bounds show which.
